Read your eMail

You can access eMail from your FSU account by:

1. Using an eMail "client" program such as Microsoft Outlook, Netscape Mail or Eudora which is installed on your computer to retrieve messages from your account on garnet (garnet.acns.fsu.edu) or mailer (mailer.fsu.edu).

Configuration:   Typically you will set the incoming (POP or IMAP) mail server to garnet.acns.fsu.edu. If you are using your FSU account to both send and receive eMail, then set the outgoing (SMTP) mail server to be garnet.acns.fsu.edu as well. If you are using an ISP other than FSU to handle your eMail (like AOL, etc.) you will have to set your SMTP to the one provided by your ISP. (More information about this is available from How to Forward your eMail). You must also enter your garnet eMail address, or just your username, as appropriate to your eMail program's configuration screen(s).

See Getting Connected to FSU's Network for more information about FSU computing.
See also Network Configuration: Names & Numbers.

2. Using webmail. Webmail runs at UCS and allows you to access your FSU email account from a browser. It is the easiest way to get your mail, and you can get it anytime you are surfing the web.

3. Using a Secured Terminal Emulation (SSH software) program to log in to your account on garnet (garnet.acns.fsu.edu) or mailer (mailer.fsu.edu). Then using either Elm or Pine to read your eMail.

To log in to garnet, you will need to enter the username and password you obtained when your account was created with computer accounts. (Your username is the stuff on the left side of the "@" in your eMail address. It will look something like "abc1234"). If you cannot remember your password contact the Helpdesk by calling or going by their offices with your FSUCard and Social Security number for verification. If you want to change your password, go to: http://password.fsu.edu.

See also Elm: an eMail program.
See also Pine: an eMail program.

4. You can have messages that are sent to your FSU eMail address "forwarded" to another address ( such as your AOL address).

The easiest way to do this is go to the Account Maintenance section of computer accounts and choose eMail Forwarding. Fill in the fields and click on the Submit Form button. The change will be processed after midnight of the day you submit it, so it could take up to 24 hours for the forwarding to take effect. NOTE: Forwarding will only be done for *new* eMail messages sent to your FSU address. Any messages that were sent to your FSU address prior to the forwarding request will still be in your FSU inbox and will have to be retrieved via one of the methods above.

** If you do  FORWARD  your email...please  REMEMBER  to  REMOVE FORWARDING  when you want to use your FSU account again. Otherwise, you will be able to send mail on your FSU account, but you will not be able receive it.

See How to Forward your eMail for more information, including alternate ways to forward and unforward (remove forwarding) your mail.

Getting lots and lots of SPAM?! ...and who isn't? SPAM is unsolicited commercial email directly sent to your email Inbox or sent via massively cross-posted off-topic messages to USENET newsgroups. DO NOT reply to spam! Read our TIPS for handling spam.
