Forward your eMail

Frequently Asked Questions
about Managing your eMail when away from FSU

* Please note that mail sent via Blackboard and other FSU groups to a forwarded account may get trashed by some ISPs because the recipient is not in the 'To' line. The recipient is listed in the 'Bcc' instead, which triggers many SPAM and junk mail filters on some ISPs (such as Hotmail/Yahoo/AOL).

Leaving Temporarily

up I'm leaving FSU for the summer, how can I access my eMail from my home computer?
If you have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) at your summer residence you have four options:

1. You can use web mail at https://webmail.fsu.edu/

2. You can SSH to Garnet and read your eMail directly on the machine using either Pine or Elm.

3. You can use an eMail client like Netscape Mail, Eudora or Microsoft Outlook to retrieve your mail from Garnet and transfer it to your home computer. All you have to do is set your SMTP server to the one provided by your ISP.

Netscape Mail

Make sure that your "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" is set to the SMTP server provided by your ISP.

Your "Mail server user name" will continue to be your username on Garnet (or Mailer).

Your "Incoming mail server" (either POP or IMAP) will continue to be Garnet (or Mailer).

Make sure "SMTP" is set to the SMTP server provided by your ISP.

"Mail" will continue to be Garnet (or Mailer).

Note that if your ISP doesn't allow you to use third party software like the above, it is not giving you full PPP access. AOL does not, for example. In that case option 2 will not work for you and you will need to either change ISPs or use options 1 or 3.

4. You can set up forwarding on your Garnet account to forward your eMail to your off-campus ISP. See How do I forward my eMail to another account?

up Why do I have to change my SMTP (outgoing mail) server when I use a off-campus ISP?
The SMTP server on Garnet does not allow relaying of eMail from non-FSU addresses to non-FSU addresses. I.e. either the sender or destination address needs to be an FSU (fsu.edu) address before the SMTP server will accept the message. UCS sys admins have adopted this configuration to block unscrupulous persons from bouncing spam off our servers.

up How do I set up garnet mail from home?   Incoming Mail (POP3) and Outgoing Mail (SMTP)?
Incoming Mail (POP3): Choose the IMAP protocol rather than POP3 and set this to garnet.acns.fsu.edu
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): If you are dialing in to the FSU dialups then use: garnet.acns.fsu.edu    Otherwise, use the SMTP server for the internet service provider you are using.

up If I take a semester off will you close my account?
No. Garnet (and Mailer) accounts expire 130 days after you graduate, stop taking classes or otherwise leave FSU.

up How do I forward my eMail to another account?
There are two ways to forward your eMail:

1.  Login to your account and use a text editor to create a    .forward    file in your home directory containing a single line with the eMail address you want your mail to be forwarded TO.

2.  Login to your account and use the Forward option of the Settings submenu.

up How do I remove forwarding?
There are two ways to remove forwarding.

  1. The easiest way is to login to FSUID at http://fsuid.fsu.edu.
    Click on "Email Address List".
    Click on "FSUID Email Forwarding"
  2. Login to your account and delete the   .forward   file: To do this, type

rm .forward

at the UNIX prompt.

up I have just graduated but plan to enroll in a graduate program at FSU. Do I get to keep my account?
It depends. If you do not begin taking classes before 130 days since your graduation have elapsed, your account will expire. In that case you will have to re-register for a new account once you actually begin taking courses. If the process of applying and actually starting your graduate program at FSU takes less than 130 days then your account will remain active. (I.e., you must begin taking classes. Acceptance to a graduate program does not stop the 130 day countdown).

Leaving Permanently

up I'm graduating. What do I need to know about closing my account?
UCS allows accounts on Garnet and Mailer a grace period of up to 130 days to ease your transition to a new Internet service provider. Your account will expire after this time unless your re-enroll in classes or become an employee of FSU.

--If you begin taking classes at FSU within the 130 day grace period your account WILL remain active.

--Be sure to UNSUBSCRIBE from any mailing lists you may be subscribed to. If your mailbox fills up we'll be forced to remove your account immediately (without notice).

up As an FSU alumni, can I keep my account?
No. At this time UCS does not provide Internet access to alumni and your account cannot be extended due to future affiliation. However, you can keep your @fsu.edu email address and forward it to another non-FSU email account.

up I've gotten a job at FSU after graduation. Do I get to keep my account?
Yes. As long as you are either a student at or employed by the University, your account will be active. Your account will be removed 130 days after you terminate employment.
