Who can use Lexis-Nexis
UNIVerse? Will I be billed for my Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse use?
All students, faculty, and staff members at FSU can use the service.
They can gain access to the service simply by signing up for a free Internet
accout from University Computing Services (see http://cars.UCS.fsu.edu).
FSU has a University-wide license
for Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse, which the FSU Library is paying for. FSU users
will not be billed for using the service.
How do I
connect to Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse? Do I need a username and
password to use the Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse service?
Use any forms capable web browser and connect to
http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe. Or follow the link on the FSU
"Academic Resources"
web page at the FSU web site.
You don't need a username and
password, since access depends on where you connect from. Anybody connecting
to Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse from the FSU network should have access. The
FSU network includes all computers on the main campus (including student
owned computers with ethernet connections in dorms), computers at Innovation
Park, computers at the Panama City Campus, and those connected to the
FSU network through UCS dialup (PPP) connections.
How
do I connect to Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse from an ISP other than FSU?
To use Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse if you aren't on the FSU network, you will
need to first establish a connection to an intermediary host on the
FSU campus and then use a web client that resides on it. For example,
you might establish a telnet connection to an account on Garnet or Mailer
and use the terminal-based web browser Lynx. This applies if you are
connecting from AOL or any other online service, if you are connecting
from any remote location, if you are a distance learning student using
ICE (IBM Internet Connection for Education), or if you use any ISP other
than FSU.
Why does
Lynx jumble the options on the Lexis-Nexis UNIVerse main menu together?
Lexis-Nexis uses a table to display the main menu, and Lynx doesn't
do tables.
When I
did a query, Lynx said "Badly formed address" and a bunch of other nonsense
and then nothing happened. What did I do wrong?
You didn't do anything wrong. In response to the form data that Lynx
sent with your query, Lexis-Nexis sent back a redirect message that
(rightfully) confused Lynx. There is nothing you can do except upgrade
to Lynx 2.7 or later.
When I
did a query, Lynx said "P)roceed, use G)ET or C)ancel". What should
I do?
Congratulations! You are using Lynx 2.7 or later. Lynx has detected
the fact that Lexis-Nexis has instructed it to do something non-standard,
silly, and generally dangerous, and has asked you how it should proceed.
Type 'G' to have Lynx send a "GET" request back to Lexis-Nexis. If you
type 'P' you will get the same result as led to the previous question.
I sumbitted
a query with Microsoft Internet Explorer and got the message "Unable
to open http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe/search. The computer on
which it is located reported an invalid request".
This is believed to be a browser dependent problem related to some of
the Lynx problems described above. It can be fixed by upgrading to a
newer version of MSIE.
