University Computing Services FSU Network Naming Rules
1.0 This is a statement of the current affairs with respect to network naming and a set of proposals to be implemented first as recommendations and eventually to be accepted as rules. 1.1 The FSU network is primarily a TCP/IP network. It also carries Novell (IPX) and Macintosh (Appletalk) traffic and others. Only TCP/IP traffic travels across The Internet. All computers at FSU desiring to access The Internet have worldwide unique IP address and worldwide unique IP names. Novell(IPX), Microsoft (WINS) and Macintosh(Appletalk) however do not have unique names. As a result of the un-coordinated and conflicting names given to computers on the net many problems arise. Macintoshes should use TCP/IP protocol and IP names whenever possible. However, some Macintoshes speak Appletalk and use Appletalk names. 1.2 Therefore this 'FSU Computer Naming Standard' is beginning as a recommendation. All new copmuters should follow this recommendation. In 3 years (December 2000) all computers on campus must follow these naming conventions. Three years is chosen since that 3 is the typical lifetime of many computers used on campus. 2.0 Since each internet capable computer has a globally unique name it should be the basis of names given to Novell and Microsoft network devices. First a review of IP names in the general form yields: <name>.<organization or building>.fsu.edu. Typical names like this are: garnet.acns.fsu.edu. nu.cs.fsu.edu. e00.c7507.bfs.fsu.edu. rm207e.mch.fsu.edu. 2.1 See section 5.0 for a description of valid <organization or building> names. The <name> in the above syntax could be a single noun or a compound name with dots(.) between them. Also, IP names without an <organization or building> component are allowed only if they would be recognized by the entire campus. Therefore wfsu.fsu.edu is okay, but mary.fsu.edu is not. 3.0 Novell (IPX) traffic does not travel beyond FSU's boundaries, so there is no need for the 'fsu.edu.' identifier on the end of the name. The same applies for Windows Naming System (WINS). 3.1 Currently there
are multiple conflicting instances of Novell names. A Novell server
comes pre-configured with a name of 'server1'. We currently have a convention/rule
that all IPX computers be given numeric addresses that are the hexidecimal
equivalent of their IP address. So a computer with an IP address of
128.186.6.103 would have an IPX numeric address of 80BA0667. This insures
that all IPX computers have unique addresses and can route anywhere
across campus without conflict. This document proposes that any Novell
name 'should' be a derivative of its IP name. The derivation process
is to truncate the 'fsu.edu' from the IP name and change the dots(.)
to underbars (_). Therefore server1.UCS.fsu.edu should become server1_UCS.
Should is required here since implementing this immediately is impossible.
However, if two Novell computers do have conflicting names, then the
one who's IPX name coincides with its IP name should remain the same,
and the other computer needs to be renamed. You may want to make the
name more descriptive than srv server pr printer cd cd rom server lab lab server wan wave-lan connection www web server 4.0 Microsoft has yet another naming system. Like Novell, it is not unique. The full name for a Microsoft-networking-computer is made up of the 'name' and the 'domain'. I propose that when possible the 'domain' be equated to the <organization or building> Often it is possible for a computer to arbitrarily choose either an appropriate organization or a building for this. however, this choice is dictated by the group of computers which that the person wants their computer to share information. ????? A limitation of this may be that the name is limited to 12 or 14 characters. 4.1 So if a computer has an IP name of: server1.UCS.fsu.edu. it should have a corresponding 'WINS name' of 'server1' and a 'WINS domain' of 'UCS'. If the IP name is accounting.prt.bfs.fsu.edu then its 'WINS name' should be 'accounting.prt' and the 'WINS domain' should be 'bfs'. 5.0 Macintosh computers can use TCP/IP with IP names and addresses which allows them to access the entire Internet. Or they can use Appletalk which restricts them to the FSU campus only. When using Appletalk there is no special naming setup needed. However Appletalk users need to be aware that they use Appletalk 'Zone Names' and 'cable ranges' when talking on the net. These names and cable ranges are automatically discovered by the computer by talking to routers and other computers. All Appletalk routers on campus must follow a central naming plan and cable numbering plan. When configuring an Appletalk routing device contact UCS to get the proper assignment for the cable range and zone name. 6.0 The names listed below are the current name-roots in use in the DNS today (11/97). Acronyms to be discontinued are referenced by a hash (#). Valid building names are the 3 letter abreviations defined in the FSU Directory on page 7 and some of the organization names are given on page 15 as e-mail departmental domains. Other official names are found in the FSU General Bulletin. If multiple users request an acronym for an organization and it is an official one, then it will be added to the list of DNS acronyms. 6.1 Organization acronyms currently (11/97) used in the DNS at FSU. aas.fsu.edu. ;Athletic Academic Support #UCS-slp.fsu.edu. ;slip port on netblazer UCS.fsu.edu. ;Academic Computing & Networking Services acs.fsu.edu. ;Administrative Computing Services ais.fsu.edu. ;Administrative Information Services air.fsu.edu. ;Association for Institutional Research anthro.fsu.edu. ;Anthropology as.fsu.edu. ;College of Arts & Sciences arted.fsu.edu. ;Art Education athletics.fsu.edu. ;Athletics aus.fsu.edu. ;Administrative User Services beaches.fsu.edu. ;Beaches & Shores Resource Center bio.fsu.edu. ;Biology brf.fsu.edu. ;Biomedical Research Facility bservices.fsu.edu. ;Business Services budget.fsu.edu. ;Budget career.fsu.edu. ;Career Center ( College of Business ) cet.fsu.edu. ;Center for Educational Technology #cc.fsu.edu. ;Computing Center classics.fsu.edu. ;Classics collinsctr.fsu.edu. ;Collins Center coaps.fsu.edu. ;Center for Oceanic & Atmospheric Research cohs.fsu.edu. ;College of Human Science cob.fsu.edu. ;College of Business coss.fsu.edu. ;College of Social Sciences coe.fsu.edu. ;College of Education chem.fsu.edu. ;Chemistry cies.fsu.edu. ;Center for Intensive English Studies cpd.fsu.edu. ;Center for Professional Development & Public Service cs.fsu.edu. ;Computer Science cmr.fsu.edu. ;Center for Music Research comm.fsu.edu. ;College of Communications criminology.fsu.edu. ;School of Criminology and Criminal Justice cybermark.fsu.edu. ;Cybermark Card services dance.fsu.edu. ;School of Visual Arts & Dance dcr.fsu.edu. ;Department of Conflict Resolution dl.fsu.edu. ;Distance Learning eap.fsu.edu. ;Employee Assistance Program econ.fsu.edu. ;Economics ed.fsu.edu. ;College of Education eng.fsu.edu. ;Engineering esp.fsu.edu. ;Educational Services Program eval.fsu.edu. ;Evaluation Services flhigh.fsu.edu. ;Florida High School film.fsu.edu. ;Film School fmrl.fsu.edu. ;Fluid Mechanics Research Lab fpac.fsu.edu. ;Florida Public Affairs Center freac.fsu.edu. ;Florida Resources & Enviromental Analysis Center gfdi.fsu.edu. ;Geophysical Fluid Dymanics Institute gly.fsu.edu. ;Geology hcs.fsu.edu. ;High Performace Computing Simulation hep.fsu.edu. ;High Energy Physics history.fsu.edu. ;History housing.fsu.edu. ;Housing Services hmu.fsu.edu. ;Housewrite Music Bldg (music north) htl.fsu.edu. ;Hoffman Teaching Lab humres.fsu.edu. ;Human Resources humsci.fsu.edu. ;College of Human Sciences idl.fsu.edu. ;Interactive Distance Learning ihhsr.fsu.edu. ;Institute of Health and Human Services Research isc.fsu.edu. ;International Student Center ispa.fsu.edu. ;Institute of Science & Public Affairs law.fsu.edu. ;College of Law lib.fsu.edu. ;Library (Strozier) lis.fsu.edu. ;Library Information Services lsi.fsu.edu. ;Learning Systems Institute magnet.fsu.edu ;National High Field Magnetic Laboratory maint.fsu.edu. ;Maintenance martech.fsu.edu. ;Materials Research math.fsu.edu. ;Math Department met.fsu.edu. ;Meterology mil.fsu.edu. ;Military modlang.fsu.edu. ;Modern Languages mlt.fsu.edu. ;Mike Long Track mml.fsu.edu. ;MultiMedia Labs music.fsu.edu. ;School of Music neuro.fsu.edu. ;Neuroscience nhmfl.fsu.edu. ;National High Magnetic Field Laboratory nursing.fsu.edu. ;School of Nursing nws.fsu.edu. ;National Weather Service nwrdc.fsu.edu. ;North West Regional Data Center ocean.fsu.edu. ;Oceanography otc.fsu.edu. ;Office of Telecommunications pc.fsu.edu. ;Panama City physics.fsu.edu. ;Physics pims.fsu.edu. ;Program in Medical Science postal.fsu.edu. ;Postal police.fsu.edu. ;Police psy.fsu.edu. ;Psychology pubman.fsu.edu. ;Center for Public Management regist.fsu.edu. ;Registration rehab.fsu.edu. ;Rehab res.fsu.edu. ;Division of Research research.fsu.edu. ;Office of Research sb.fsu.edu. ;Structural biology scri.fsu.edu. ;Supercomputer Computations Research Institute seac.fsu.edu. ;Southeast Archeological Center sgmc.fsu.edu. ;Student Government Movie Channel socwork.fsu.edu. ;School of Social Work stat.fsu.edu. ;Statistics Department vpsa.fsu.edu. ;Vice President for Student Affairs v89.fsu.edu. ;v89 WVFS radio station wvfs.fsu.edu ;WVFS radio station wfsu.fsu.edu. ;WFSU Television Station6.2 Building acronyms currently (11/97) used in the DNS at FSU bel.fsu.edu.
