Conventions

This guide contains many examples of commands and interactive sessions. The following typographic conventions are used:

courier
Text that represents potential computer input or output, including commands, file names, and examples of interactive sessions. For example, ls is an example of a Unix command.

courier italic
Computer input or output for which a substitution is to be made. For example, command can be replaced with any Unix command.

courier bold
User input in examples of interactive sessions.

[bracketed]
Optional command arguments indicated by surrounding brackets.

Prompts
% C shell prompt.
$ Bourne or Korn shell prompt.
