University Computing Services
Email Account Name
Information
Did you know you
had more than one FSU email address? These optional email addresses
are called email aliases.
For new students,
(accounts created after March 8, 2002) your aliases look like:
accountname@fsu.edu
firstname.middleinitial.lastname.yr[ord]@fsu.edu
If there is no middle name, then its just
firstname.lastname.yr[ord]@fsu.edu
The account
name follows the convention of your initials and the year and ordinal.
If you have only two initials, then your account will only have two
letters/two digits/and a possible ordinal.
The
year [yr] is a two-digit number for the year you entered or became
affiliated with FSU.
The ordinal
[ord] is up to a three-character string to resolve conflicts.
The ordinal may not exist if the user account name is unique without
it.
Examples include:
(all aliases are case insensitive - case doesn't matter)
Aaron C. Brown,
who started at FSU in 2002, would have aliases that looked like:
acb02@fsu.edu
aaron.c.brown.02@fsu.edu
Anthony C. Baker, who started at FSU in 2002, would have aliases that
looked like:
acb02b@fsu.edu
anthony.c.baker.02b@fsu.edu
** These student '@fsu.edu' aliases will remain with you for life, but
you'll need to set up forwarding when you receive notification that
the garnet account is to be deleted.
For the existing students, (accounts prior to March 8, 2002) your
aliases consist of your initials and the last 4 digits of the Garnet account
name (your garnet id).
garnetid@fsu.edu
firstname.middleinitial.lastname.4digits@fsu.edu
Example:
(all aliases are case insensitive - case doesn't matter)
Aaron C. Brown
would have an alias that looked like:
acb3155@fsu.edu
aaron.c.brown.3155@fsu.edu
** These student '@fsu.edu' aliases will remain with you for life, but
you'll need to set up forwarding when you receive notification that
the Garnet account is to be deleted.
Faculty/staff have
similar aliases. These are of the form
last@fsu.edu
first.last@fsu.edu
first.middleinitial.last@fsu.edu
nickname.last@fsu.edu
accountname@fsu.edu
(all aliases are case insensitive - case doesn't matter)
None
of the first four are guaranteed to be unique, but often one or
more of them are. The fifth will always be unique and is usually of the
form first initial and last name up to the first 7 characters. There are
variations on that such as using the middle initial instead of or in addition
to the first initial to resolve conflicts. The nickname comes from the
HRMS database and must be placed there by the departmental payroll person.
** These faculty and staff '@fsu.edu' aliases go away when the employee
leaves the university.
